Mom & Pop
A couple of my pals just tied the knot, and as gifts to their wedding party they did portraits of their family and friends. It reminded me that back in June I did a couple portraits of my mom and dad that somehow never made it to the blog. I felt inspired to try a different style, drawings made primarily with shapes rather than line and a more muted color palette. I think it's interesting to see how an artist portrays his or her parents—is it an honest depiction or is it diplomatic; is it exaggerated; is it more or less confident than the artist's other work? What does it say about me, for instance, that I felt I had to illustrate mine in a foreign style? Does it make a difference in the outcome if the piece is a gift vs. a personal work? (Yes, yes it does.)
